Overview
The Diploma in Public Service Interpreting (DPSI) Legal course gives you the knowledge and skills you need to work as an interpreter and translator in the police forces, courts, and tribunals of the UK.
The course prepares you for the level 6 Diploma in Public Service Interpreting (DPSI) Legal qualification. Having the level 6 DPSI qualification is a mark of your professional competence and is required for working in the legal system. It can also help you access more and better paid interpreting work. With your DPSI qualification you can also apply to register on the National Register of Public Service Interpreters (NRPSI).

- Interpreting and translation skills for the legal sector
- Short consecutive mode interpreting
- Simultaneous mode interpreting
- Oral sight translation
- Written translation of legal documents
- Terminology processing and glossary building
- Preparing for the level 6 DPSI exam

Teaching and Learning
Each week you’ll join a 2-hour live class online. In this class you can work with your course tutor and interact with other students. After class, you’ll have self-study extension activities to build on your learning in the live class.
Practice and Assessment
Assessments are set throughout the 22-week course. These assessments are a chance to practice your new skills and to receive feedback on your performance. The assessments are all based on tasks you’ll face in your level 6 DPSI Legal qualification. They include:
- Written translation into and out of English
- Simulated dialogue interpreting assignments
- Oral sight translation into and out of English
- Simultaneous interpreting into and out of English
In addition to your weekly live classes and feedback on your assessments, you’ll have the opportunity for one-to-one tutorials with your bilingual reviewer and your course tutor. They will help you with all aspects of your learning on the course.
Completion and Qualification
On completion of your course, you can decide whether to take all units or selected units of the Diploma in Public Service Interpreting qualification. Your course tutor will help you with this decision. You’ll also receive a Certificate of Completion confirming the training you have undertaken.
Requirements
To participate in the course, you need to:
- Have native or near-native language proficiency in English and your Other Language (spoken and written), at CEFR level C1/C2
- Be able to commit a minimum of 8 hours per week to study and research
- Be able to use Zoom on a computer or tablet
- Attend an interview on Zoom with the course tutor
