Overview

The Diploma in Translation module 2 course will prepare you for the second and third units of the Diploma in Translation (DipTrans). In this course, you will examine and practice past DipTrans Unit 2 and 3 semi-specialised translation papers. You will also learn to critically evaluate your own translations and receive bilingual reviewer feedback on your chosen practice translations. Your course will give you the knowledge and skills you need to succeed in Unit 2 and 3 of the Dip Trans.


Course Content

The 7-week course covers the following topics and skills:

  • Theories and concepts in semi-specialised translation
  • Translation techniques and resources for the DipTrans Units 2 and 3: written translation of a semi-specialised translation papers (Technology, Business, Literature, Science, Social Science, Law, Arts and Culture)
  • Understanding and applying the DipTrans Units 2 and 3: written translation of semi-specialised texts marking criteria
  • Exam strategies and techniques for the Dip Trans Unit 2 and 3 semi-specialised translation papers
  • Learning to think like a DipTrans examiner

Teaching and Learning

Each week, you’ll join a 2-hour live class online. In this class you can work with your course tutor and interact with other students. After the class, you’ll have self-study extension activities to build on your learning in the live class.


Practice and Assessment

Practice translations are set throughout the 7-week course, offering you a chance to practice your skills and receive feedback on your performance. The practice translations are all taken from DipTrans Unit 2 and Unit 3 past papers.

In addition to your weekly on-line classes and feedback on your practice translations, you’ll have the opportunity for one-to-one tutorials with your bilingual reviewer and your course tutor. They will help you with all aspects of your learning on the course.


Completion and Qualification

On completion of your course, you’ll be ready to take your chosen Unit 2 and Unit 3: written translation of a semi-specialised text papers. You’ll also receive a Certificate of Completion confirming the training you have undertaken.


Requirements

To participate in the course, you need to:

  • Have completed the Diploma in Translation module 1: General Translation Skills course
  • Have native or near-native language proficiency in English and your Other Language (spoken and written), at CEFR level C1/C2
  • Be able to commit a minimum of 8 hours per week to study and research
  • Be able to use Google Drive and Zoom on a computer or tablet
