Overview

The Level 3 Certificate in Community Interpreting course gives you the knowledge and skills you need to achieve your Level 3 Certificate in Community Interpreting.

The Level 3 Certificate in Community Interpreting is a mark of your professional competence. With your Level 3 qualification, you can register with work providers who can call on you for healthcare, education, welfare and benefits, or social care interpreting assignments.


Course Content

  • Introduction to community interpreting
  • Short consecutive mode interpreting (healthcare, education, welfare and benefits, or social care interpreting sessions)
  • Oral sight translation into and out of English (public information leaflets, forms and questionnaires, personal correspondence)
  • Bilingual terminology and glossary building for community interpreting assignments
  • Professional ethics and professional boundaries for the community interpreter
  • Working as a freelance interpreter

Teaching and Learning

Each week, you’ll join a 1.5-hour live class online. In this class, you’ll get valuable guidance on how to develop your community interpreting skills and to prepare for your Level 3 assessment. After class, you’ll have self-study extension activities to build on your learning in the live class.


Practice and Assessment

You will practice the skills needed to achieve your Level 3 Certificate in Community Interpreting throughout your 7-week course.

In addition to your weekly live classes and feedback on your assessments, you can have one-to-one tutorials with your bilingual reviewer.


Completion and Qualification

You can take your Level 3 Certificate in Community Interpreting assessment on completion of your 7-week course. The assessment consists of:

  • A simulated dialogue interpreting assignment in a typical community interpreting settings (approximately 20 minutes)
  • An oral sight translation of a short written text into English (approximately 10 minutes)
  • An oral sight translation of a short written text out of English (approximately 10 minutes)

You’ll also receive a Certificate of Completion confirming the training you have undertaken.


Requirements

To participate in the course, you need to:

  • Have native or near-native language proficiency in English and your Other Language (spoken and written), at CEFR level C1/C2
  • Be able to commit a minimum of 8 hours per week to study and research
  • Be able to use Zoom on a computer or tablet
  • Attend an interview on Zoom with the course tutor
